Santh Jnaneshwar : The writing of Amruthanubhava
Om Jai Sairam! Verily blessed is he who takes delight in listening to the stories of the saints. It is by his store of merits that he has got such an opportunity. It is extremely difficult to see the beginning or the end of a Saint's life which is verily an incarnation of god. Santha (Saint) and Anantha (God) are one. Just as a child struggles to walk and is susceptible to fall, I feel helpless when trying to sing their glory. However just as a child can walk with the help of the mother's firm hand holding it's hand I cling onto the hand of Sai ma (Mother Sai) the Sadguru to help me in describing his glory. You are the veritable Panduranga, the ancient deity of Pandharpur. Oh consort of Rukmai (Mother Rukmini), please hold my hand and help me sing your glory, for I take delight in nothing else. Your glory is unfathomable and only you can explain them. I submit my ego at your lotus feet, kindly help me sing the glory of your incarnation as the blessed boy saint Jnanadeva.
As the young boy Saint Jnaneshwar Maharaj, Panduranga brought about a spiritual revival in the region of India called Maharashtra and also the rest of India. The 12th century was like a night in Bharata Varsha because of the deteriorating society in Kali Yuga and the invasion of Yavanas in North India. During this night, Jnaneshwar Maharaj appeared as the full moon and the other saints were like the stars and the planets. Their brightness lit up the path of the traveler in the city called life and helped him travel to his destination called Self realization.
Such was the greatness of Jnaneshwar Maharaj and his brother and guru Nivritthinath Maharaj, Sopan, Muktabai, Namadeva, Ghora Kumbhaara, Savta Mali, Chokar Malhar, Gonayee, Janabai, Visoba only to name of a few. Just like there are several rivers and lakes but are made up of the same water, these Saints were the one god in different forms.
After their piligrimage the saint family of Jnaneshwar Maharaj returned to their village of Alandi. By now this had become a place of pilgrimage because of their divine presence. Santh Jnaneshwar then told his brother and Guru Lord Nivritthinath "Oh Gurudev! By your divine grace alone have I been able to fulfill the reason behind my birth. Now if you think that I have completed all my earthly duties, please allow me to perform the Sanjivani Samadhi (Going into union with the divine while living and then leaving the body and merging with Brahman who is everywhere). For this world and all the activities in it are verily a dream crafted by Maya. To wake up is to merge with the one Brahman who is the one who truly exists. I now seek your guidance in this matter. May your feet guide me into reaching that state of placid green pastures bereft of the storm called Maya."
Lord Nivritthinath replied "Oh Jnanadeva, the very purpose of your incarnation was to enlighten souls tortured by Samsara (life) and to lead them to emancipation. You are the supreme yogi and Jnani (Full of divine knowledge or knowledge of the self). Your blissful experiences and divinity must reach the common people. Just as an experienced traveler draws a map for the benefit of the amateur traveler, please put all your experiences into writing."
"As you say oh Gurudeva (Oh Lord)! For your feet verily will accomplish the writing of these experiences. Your grace caused me to go through all those beautiful experiences. And now the very same will enable me to write them".
Thus the divine Maharaj started writing the Amrutanubhava (The nectar of divine experiences). In 800 couplets the Maharaj wrote about all his divine experiences which were as boundless as the Universe. The Amruthanubhava is like the Nectar which the devas (Gods) obtained after the churning of the ocean. Blessed is he who reads this. He is sure to obtain emancipation by the grace of Jnaneshwar Maharaj who is the veritable Panduranga.
Blessed are they who see you in all names and forms! You came as Jnanadeva to teach everyone that you are the only one. Praise be to you oh most ancient deity and consort of Rukmai! Oh Umapati, You saved the world by consuming the Kolahala. Help this child of yours and do not ignore me because of my defects. For you are verily the mother oh Girija. A mother forgives her child and loves him no matter what his defects. Please shower your love on me and grace me by your presence. Oh Sadguru you are verily all the divinity, you are brahma and you created Maaya. You are verily the divine Jnanadeva!
Jai Jai Ram Krishna Hari!
Shree Satchitananda Sadguru Sainath Maharaj Ki Jai!
Bow to Shree Sai! Peace be to all!
