Santh Jnaneshwar : The revival of Satchitananda buva

Om Jai Sai Ram! Verily Sadguru is the sagun form of Parabrahma! He is the only reality. If one is blessed with a sadguru, he need not worry, for by the grace of the Sadguru alone the person crosses this samsara safe and sound and attains to the eternal state of Brahman! It is this that gives me the courage, for I know that I am a dullard and it is only by the grace of the sadguru that I can write these posts and sing his glory! This glory has no beginning or ending and is eternal! I beseech the Sadguru to guide me in describing his greatness.

As described in the previous post, wherever the brother and sisters went miracles followed them. Just as the day follows night or just as a calf follows it's mother, thus did miracles follow them everywhere. A few years passed thus, and most of the people started believing in them. One day they were passing by a village. There they saw a tragic sight. A dead body of a young man was being carried, and his wailing widow was coming by his side. The widow wailing and in pain and shock, saw the brother and sister saints. As though drawn by their spiritual power, she came to them and fell at the feet of Lord Jnanadeva. Jnaneshwar blessed her thus "Saubhagyavati bhava (May you be happily married!)". This shocked the lady and she cried, "But deva, how can I be a Soubhagyavati if my husband lies dead?". Then Lord Jnanadeva said "Oh mother, it is the omnipresent lord who made me utter these words! How can they be wrong? Your husband is very much alive! Let me go and call him." So saying Lord Jnanadev headed towards the pall bearers and addressed them thus "Please keep him on the ground". The pall bearers did just that. All the people gathered started discussion thus "This lad must be quite mad! Though he looks divine, he says the man is not dead! Yet, we can all verily see that he is! Indeed the vaidya (doctor) has declared him dead! Why is he delaying the cremation and causing problems here?" . While they were discussing thus Lord Jnanadeva spoke to the dead man "Oh SatChitAnanada (Literally meaning existance-knowledge and bliss), please wake up. Hear me out! Please wake up! Enough of this slumber!" No sooner had Jnanadeva Mauli (Guru) uttered this, did the man wake up. The wife of the man was overjoyed and again fell at the feet of Jnanadeva mauli! All the people assembled were stunned and they fell at the feet of Jnanadeva. They started talking thus "There is no doubt about it! It is Panduranga himself come to save us! Jai Panduranga!" They sang the glory of Jnanadeva! Then Lord Jnanadeva spoke thus "Oh friends, of what use is it to praise me? It is all by the grace of the guru" So saying he bowed before Nivritthinath. Then he continued "Only the body dies my friends! The soul as it says in the Gita, cannot be cut by sword, burnt by fire or swept by the wind or wet by the water". The people were mesmerized. They spoke thus "Oh revered saint, please tell us more about the Gita!" . Then Lord Jnanadeva turned towards his Guru Nivritthinath. Lord Nivritthinath understood and said "Yes Jnanadeva, Please provide an exposition of the Gita in the native tongue (Marathi). Let the people be benefited by it". Lord Jnanadeva bowed before his Guru and said "As you wish Gurudev!".

The man who was revived and who had heard all that had happened to him until now from his wife, came with his wife and fell at the feet of Jnanadeva. He spoke thus "My Lord, you gave me life. You are my Guru now. I am your servant. ". Then Lord Jnanadeva said "Oh Satchitanada buva, you will do great service to humanity if you can help me write the exposition on the Gita in Marathi. Newase is not far from here. We shall start writing there. You can help record the expostions".

Thus did Lord Jnaneshwar decide to write the Bhavartha Deepika his critique on the Bhagavat Gita which has now become famous as Jnaneshwari.

Hey Sharat,

Though Jnaneshwari was mentioned in Satcharitra, I never knew how it originated. Thank you for telling us about this great book and the great saint. May Baba bless you. Om Sai Ram
