The pillar of faith

An ambassador came to the court
Of the mightiest king on earth

To make peace was his mission
To save a beautiful kingdom from demolition

The Lord of Lanka however would not yield
Added insult to injury by not giving him a seat

Remembering Lord Rama's might Angada roared
Try see if any of you can displace my foot

Should any of your warriors be successful
Then on behalf of my Lord Rama I promise

We shall leave Lanka without shooting a single arrow
If you can move my foot there shall be no fight tomorrow

So much was his faith in the name of Lord Rama
"If you can but move my foot you wretch" said Angad

Then forgoing Sita, my Lord Rama will turn back
And leave without a fight this I promise

Then taking the mighty name of Lord Rama
He planted his foot firmly in the ground

The demon warriors of the court were pleased
An easy challenge and our victory in this war is confirmed

The demon warrior Shardula moved with confidence
Towards the pillar of faith that was Angada's foot

This warrior had the strength of ten sabre tooth tigers
And yet try as he might he could not budge the foot

Then came other warrior demons in the court
Each mightier than the other in valor and strength

The mighty demon son of Ravana, Atikay came next
He was blessed with a boon by Lord Shiva making him next to invincible

And yet all those boons were in vain
For try as he might all his arm could feel was pain

The mighty Rakshasa general Akampana came next
Could not move the foot on any pretext

Enough of this, roared Indrajith.
He was Ravana's mightiest son

As he walked towards Angada, the earth trembled
All the demon warriors were sure Angada will be humbled

As a chaste woman's virtue does not ever falter
Or as a pure celibate's mind never for an instant does weaver

Just like that stood firmly planted Angada's foot
In his mind thinking of none but Lord Rama he stood still

Never had anyone seen Indrajit getting tired
None had ever seen him become so frustrated

And Yet what could he do? For who can in this world
Move the pillar of faith standing on Lord Rama's name

Ravana's heart witnessing this skipped a beat
He thought he himself should accomplish this feat

And Angada pushed him to the ground displacing his crown
As Ravana fell on the floor showing on his face a frown

"Wretch, I challenged the courtiers not you!" Said Angada
"The honor of defeating you should go to my Lord Rama"

Kicking the crown of ignorance from the ground
Angada flew back to his army in the battleground

Thus is the power of the name of Lord Rama
Build a pillar of faith around this

And you will stand immovable against life's difficulties
Like Angada's firm foot stood in the court of Lanka

Sairam Meena, Thank you so much for your kind comments..This was a rough translation of the Hindi song (Probably from Goswami Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas) which I saw in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayana :)

Jai Sairam
