Shahbaaz

Om Shree Ganeshaaya Namaha! Om Shree Kuladevatyai Namaha! Om Shree Sainaathaya Namaha! I prostrate before Lambodhara, who is the origin of this limitless universe that we inhibit. All forms are but your various manifestations. All the scriptures of various religions put together fail to describe your glory. What then is the recourse for a dullard like me. Knowing that you are the in dweller and the real doer, I submit my ego at your feet and beseech you to help me sing the glory of 2 of your Auliyas who reached your realm and submerged in the ocean of your love.

I now go onto describe how Hazrat Lal Shahbaaz Qalander got the name of Shahbaaz (Falcon) by one fabulous miracle which proves that he had merged into oneness with the almighty in his heart. By his extreme spiritual austerities and love for the Supreme the saint had reached a state of god-intoxication. Always was he in a mast (Intoxicated) state. He would wear robes of the color red which made people affectionately add the name "Lal" to his full name. He settled in the holy Shivastan (Place dear to Lord Shiva) now called Shehwan. The following incident happened in the lives of 4 young Auliyas dear to Allah.

Hazrat Lal Qalander along with 3 other Sufi Saints went to Makkah and Madina. In the retinue was also the great Sufi saint Hazrat Shah Farid Ganj Shakar. His mother used to place sugar under the mat to pursuade him to pray. Eventually even when his mother stopped putting sugar under the mat, the mother of all, the almighty ensured that there would be sugar cubes under his mat during his prayer. Hence the name shakar at the end of the saint.

After a vision of the Prophet's (pbuh) blessed tomb, they were returning and halted for the night in a town on the cost of Arabia. They decided to eat and Hazrat Shah Farid Ganj Shakar went to get bread from the local baker. The baker's wife, being a wicked and of a lustful character was captivated by the handsome and austere face of the Sufi saint. She immediately tried to seduce him, but the noble Hazrat Baba Farid whose beloved was the almighty Allah and none else and had a doubtless clear heart and conscience which was a mirror of god, refused her advances. Upset, the wicked lady screamed bringing the local guards to the place and said the Saint tried to take advantage of her. The local guards nor the Governor to whom they took him, were aware of the greatness of the saint, and instead of listening to him, the Governor condemned him to be executed.

When the Hazrat Lal Qalander heard this, he immediately fathomed the truth and decided to set things right by using his supernatural powers obtained by his spiritual austerities. He immediately transformed one of his companions into a deer and sent him near the site of the execution. The people who had come to watch the execution were fond of venison and surprised to find a deer in these parts ran after the deer. The deer went far away from the place and finally gave it's pursuers the slip. Tired they sat down to rest. In the meantime the divine Qalander transformed another sufi saint into a big lion and sent it towards the place of execution. This shocked the guards who were to execute Hazrat Baba Farid and the went and hid themselves. While this was happening, the god intoxicated Qalander melted into the air and transformed himself into a large Peregrine Falcon and then swooped and picked Hazrat Shah Farid Ganj Shakar and saved him from the terrible fate. Hence the name "Shahbaaz" came to be added to him. How to describe his glory. He used to melt in his love for the divine and used to vanish and materialize at will. He used to soar in the sky of God's love like a falcon. Praise be unto Hazrat Lal Shahbaaz Qalander, the Jhule Lal of Sindh. May his grace be upon one and all.
